     Your 60-second
     Breakthrough Bite

“Begin challenging your own assumptions.
Your assumptions are your windows on the world.
Scrub them off every once in awhile, or the light won't come in.”

                                                                                  -Alan Alda

Breakthrough Principle: Present-Moment Awareness (Part 2)

Insight:As humans, we are often filled with assumptions that we are unaware that we are making. Most of us assume that we know how things should happen, or that we know someone else’s motives, or when something is a “good thing” or a “bad thing.” Hence the origin of conflict with others or with life itself: when people and situations don’t respond as we know that they “should,” we get upset. The reality is that our upset is coming not from the other person or the situation, but from our assumptions about how the the other person or life should be. What if we entered into each day, each conversation, or each event with total openness, curiosity and “not knowing?” What if we were open to the possibility that each person or event that we encounter has something important to teach us? What if we didn't assume that we already knew "the answer?" Would this not be the difference between life (constant growth) and death (closed with no growth)?

Action:

Find one opportunity each day over the next week to ask yourself, “What is to be learned here?” or “What assumptions am I making about how this person or situation should be - that is blinding me to other possibilities?”

Am I more committed to "being right" or to learning, expanding and finding new solutions and ways of seeing?

Enjoy!

George Fleming
